Verdar

Verdar is a monologue written by Nicolás Lange, starring Paulina García and directed by Paula Aros Gho. It was originally created for the second edition of Escena Austral, the Theatre and Education Festival founded by La Santa, as part of the program 2×3: What Do I Inhabit?. For this initiative, Escena Austral brought together two groups of national and local artists from southern Chile to explore this question through performance. Verdar premiered at Teatro del Lago in Frutillar in May 2022.

After the death of her mother in a rural, forested region, an orchestra conductor attempts to take her own life on the stage set of the theatre production for which she was the composer. Her suicide attempt is interrupted by the theatre’s security guard. The play begins with a simple yet profound question: How do we survive grief, and who do we become after an extreme experience?

The staging establishes a direct relationship with the place in which it is performed. The actress addresses the audience directly, inviting them to participate in reconstructing the concert at the heart of the story while questioning ideas of belonging and territorial identity. The production also reflects on life far from urban centers: What does it mean to live surrounded by isolated natural landscapes? How do cold, isolation, and the color green shape our relationship with the world?

Following its premiere, the production continued with seasons at Teatro UC and Teatro Camilo Henríquez as part of FITAM 2023, as well as performances in other regions of Chile.
