Papelucho almost aaalmost an orphan

María Izquierdo writes and directs this free adaptation based on the first two Papelucho books by renowned Chilean author Marcela Paz. The production is conceived as an original musical score performed by five artists on stage, each simultaneously acting as musician, performer, and actor.

A must-see production for the whole family, featuring one of the most beloved characters in Chilean literature. Bringing generations together, the show promises to fill the theatre with creativity, laughter, and music.

Recommended for family audiences of all ages.

Papelucho almost aaalmost an orphan tells the story of an imaginative eight-year-old boy who is constantly coming up with brilliant ideas to keep himself entertained. His curiosity leads him to discover realities very different from his own and to connect with people from all walks of life. Although his actions are always driven by good intentions, adults often misunderstand him. More often than not, when Papelucho tries to solve a problem, he ends up making things even worse. Overwhelmed by the growing number of questions and secrets in his mind, he finds comfort—and much more than that—in keeping a diary.

This production emerged from a collaboration between La Santa and Teatro del Canto, a company formed by actresses María Izquierdo and Elvira López Alfonso, musician Cristian Molina, and theatre designer Gabriela González.

Since its creation, Teatro del Canto has focused on family theatre, with the mission of encouraging reading through theatrical experiences and bringing the treasures of literature to audiences of all ages.

By adapting classics of Chilean children’s literature, the company has created productions that celebrate the intimate and reflective spaces fostered by reading and writing. Their journey began in 2017 with the premiere, in collaboration with Teatro UC, of The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly, based on the novel by Chilean author Luis Sepúlveda. The production quickly became a landmark of family theatre in Chile, attracting thousands of spectators and touring festivals throughout the country for more than ten years.

It depicts a Chile very different from the present-day one, yet the Chilean character is captured in this child.
