Gladys Celebrates 15 Years!

When it premiered in 2011 at Teatro del Puente, Gladys was an immediate success, filling every theatre where it was performed. With its original cast still intact, the production continues to move audiences across different regions of Chile year after year.

The play also received four Altazor Awards in 2012 for Best Playwriting, Best Direction, Best Actress, and Best Actor. That same year, Portuguese critics selected it as the Best Production Presented in Portugal.

An autistic woman who was “exiled” by her family twenty years earlier during a family celebration unexpectedly returns, free of resentment, disrupting the calm of a Christmas gathering.

Uxue (Antonia Santa María), an autistic young woman, is looking forward to celebrating Twelfth Night with her two older siblings, Ian (Álvaro Viguera) and Lucía (Elisa Zulueta), her father Ander (Sergio Hernández), and her aunt Ane (Coca Guazzini). However, the unexpected arrival of Gladys (Catalina Saavedra) from the United States—an autistic aunt she has never met—sparks a family controversy and reveals the secrets that led to Gladys’s long years of isolation.

Through a blend of dark humor and emotional pain, the play portrays common family situations that erupt in unexpected ways. Driven by wit and irony, Gladys unfolds at a fast pace, gradually revealing the suffering of a family whose wounds feel deeply familiar and profoundly human.

Gladys was not originally produced by La Santa, but emerged from a collaboration between Elisa Zulueta and Antonia Santa María, who secured funding for the project through a Fondart grant in 2011. The production is currently managed by La Santa.

“The pressure cooker seen in our play simply depicts a way of life that—despite the passing years—we continue to witness and experience; it is part of our character. That is precisely why it is important to show it.”
