UNCLE VANYA
Uncle Vanya was our second co-production in the Fundamental Authors series, featuring an outstanding cast and a dramaturgical adaptation by Rafael Gumucio.
Uncle Vanya takes us into the life of a family living in the Russian countryside at the end of the nineteenth century. Vanya, the head of the household, is a man in the midst of a profound existential crisis, overwhelmed by a sense of personal failure and the frustration of reaching a stage in life where he feels it is too late to change its course. Guided by duty for most of his life, he has devoted himself to others while setting aside his own desires.
His world is shaken by the return of Aleksandr, his former brother-in-law and now the husband of Elena, a woman considerably younger than him with whom Vanya is secretly in love. His hopes, however, are ultimately frustrated, as are those of his niece Sonya, a young woman with little prospect of happiness who is in love with a doctor. As in all of Chekhov’s plays, the doctor is keenly aware of the existential loneliness that defines the lives of these characters—people trapped by the relentless passage of time and the weight of unrealized dreams.
Co-produced by La Santa and CorpArtes, the production enjoyed a successful first season before returning for a second run at Teatro UC.
