Happy End

Happy End is a musical comedy that, through powerful scenes and beautiful songs, presents a vision of humanity as fundamentally social, where preserving one’s dignity becomes essential. In this story, the characters appear unable to think or act independently, deprived of true freedom.

Set in 1920s Chicago, the play follows a group of criminals confronted by the Salvation Army, whose members are determined to fight sin at all costs. Lieutenant Lillian Holiday, known as “Hallelujah Lil,” sets out to reform Bill Cracker, the leader of a dangerous gang of gangsters. Just as her efforts begin to succeed, she is expelled from the Salvation Army for what is considered improper conduct, despite being the organization’s most popular evangelist.

Meanwhile, the criminals, led by “The Fly,” decide to join the Salvation Army after realizing the depth of Bill and Lillian’s love for one another. Together, they resolve to open a new mission with the unlikely goal of saving the souls of the capitalists.

Happy End was La Santa’s first co-production in the Fundamental Authors series, created in collaboration with GAM. Together, we brought to life a production that remains unforgettable for everyone involved in its creation, as well as for the audiences who filled the theatre throughout its only season in March 2016.
