The Birthday Party, by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter and directed by Álvaro Viguera, is our next theatrical co-production with Teatro Municipal de Las Condes.

Premiere: January 2027

Stan is an unsuccessful pianist and the sole lodger in a boarding house. Its elderly owners care for him devotedly, especially Meme, whose affection for Stanley is at once maternal and subtly erotic.

One day, two mysterious strangers arrive and rent the only available room. They seem to be looking for someone. Stan, perhaps?

When they learn that Meme is determined to celebrate a birthday, they eagerly join in. The fact that it is not actually Stan’s birthday does nothing to stop the celebration.

As the party unfolds, Stan’s past begins to surface: the shadow of an uncertain crime, questions of guilt – or innocence – and the haunting experience of exile.

The Birthday Party is a comedy. It is the kind where you laugh, feel uncomfortable, laugh again, and might leave the theater not quite sure what just happened to you. Harold Pinter called this a “comedy of menace”, that strange realm where the absurd and the sinister share a table, smile politely at one another, and destroy a man without ever raising their voices.

Written in 1958, the play remains unsettlingly relevant today. For we all know Goldberg and Cano: that power which offers no explanations, arrives impeccably dressed, and speaks your name with excessive familiarity.

And we all know Pedro—the one who sees, the one who stays silent, the one who remains seated.

In Chile, we know a thing or two about all of that.
