THE RECORDING

The Recording is the first play written by acclaimed Chilean novelist Rafael Gumucio. Inspired by his grandmother, Marta Rivas, the production stars Delfina Guzmán as a left-wing aristocrat reflecting on her experiences during the years of the Unidad popular government, alongside Elisa Zulueta as her granddaughter. “One generation looking the other in the eye.”

The Recording tells the story of an encounter between a granddaughter and her grandmother. Elisa sets out to record her grandmother’s life, only to uncover contradictions, long-held secrets, and a deeply personal perspective on Chile’s recent history through the eyes of a privileged witness. A woman who lived through two dictatorships and two periods of exile, she experienced one of the country’s greatest political and social transformations from within the upper-class circles of Chilean society.

The play invites reflection through the encounter between two generations: one that lived through the Unidad popular government and the military coup, and another that has inherited their political, social, and family consequences. At the same time, it becomes a dialogue between two generations of Chilean actresses—Delfina Guzmán and Elisa Zulueta—and serves as a tribute to a remarkable figure in Chile’s artistic history and to the profound social changes surrounding 1973.

The project was funded by GAM, with the collaboration of FITAM. It premiered on October 10, 2013, as part of GAM’s commemorative program marking the 40th anniversary of the military coup. It later returned for a second season during FITAM and was presented at Sala Verdi in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Marta Rivas was a blend of vanity and naivety. It mattered to her that her opinion carried weight and force. A highly intelligent, highly cultured woman.
