Founded by Antonia Santa Mar\u00eda, \u00c1lvaro Viguera (La Santa), and Magdalena Leighton (Alipio), in collaboration with Teatro del Lago, the festival brings together theatrical performances, educational programs, and audience engagement activities to celebrate the month of theatre from the south of Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival&#8217;s first edition took place from <\/span><b>May 11 to 21, 2021<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led us to adapt the entire program into a digital format.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the goal of creating an online program that could reach audiences throughout Chile and beyond from the southern region of the country, we produced a digital theatre festival broadcast from the KIWI studios at Teatro del Lago in Frutillar, hosted by actress Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Mira. All activities were conceived, created, and produced remotely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main activities of <\/span><b>Escena Austral 2021<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> included:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Escena Austral Opening \/ World Theatre Day Celebration<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival opened with the presentation of the digital production <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breath<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alongside a tribute to the admired Chilean actress Delfina Guzm\u00e1n in recognition of her remarkable artistic career.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3&#215;3: <\/b><b><i>Where Is the Future?<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three digital productions created by nine artists from across Chile and the southern region explored the question, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where Is the Future?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Each group of three artists developed a theatrical response to the theme, followed by a public discussion with the three principal creators.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Marl\u00e9n and Marlon: A Small Theatre Company&#8217;s Adventures<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A family radio drama created in collaboration with the acclaimed theatre company Tryo Teatro Banda. The series was distributed through digital platforms and local radio stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Theatre-Making in Company<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A panel discussion featuring three Chilean theatre companies: CHILE-NO from Puerto Montt, La Canalla from Punta Arenas, and the nationally renowned company Tryo Teatro Banda. The conversation explored collaborative creative processes and theatre-making across different regions of Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Applied Theatre Seminar<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty scholarships were awarded to school teachers, enabling them to explore theatre as a pedagogical tool for their classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Led by Ver\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda Huidobro and Luna Del Canto from Teatro La Balanza, the seminar consisted of two stages: a twelve-hour intensive workshop held during Escena Austral, followed by online mentoring throughout the remainder of the year. Participants who completed the program received certification from the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile in December.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This initiative, created by La Santa and Alipio, was co-produced by Teatro del Lago and made possible through the collaboration of Fundaci\u00f3n Mustakis, Fundaci\u00f3n Olivo, Fundaci\u00f3n Plades, Biblioteca Frutillar, Centro Cultural GAM, Kiwi Producciones, and the Teatro del Lago School of the Arts. The project was sponsored by the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile and supported by media partners T13 Radio, Radio Oasis, RadioPlay, Emisor Podcasting, and Ciudad Creativa TV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, these partnerships allowed us to focus on a carefully curated program of activities that established a clear identity for the festival and laid the foundation for what we hope Escena Austral will continue to become in future editions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This vision led to the festival&#8217;s second edition, held <\/span><b>May 6\u20138, 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this time as an in-person event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>ESCENA AUSTRAL 2022<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second edition of Escena Austral\u2014and its first to be held in person\u2014took place from <\/span><b>May 6 to 8, 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It proved to be a rich and highly successful experience, fostering meaningful encounters and new collaborations among artists from across Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Escena Austral 2022 Opening<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival opened with a tribute at Teatro del Lago&#8217;s Amphitheatre, honoring the extraordinary career of actress, director, and theatre educator Ver\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda Huidobro, whose lifelong dedication to theatre\u2014and especially theatre education\u2014has inspired generations of artists and teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2&#215;3: <\/b><b><i>What Do I Inhabit?<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two creative teams, each composed of artists from across Chile and southern Chile, explored the question <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Do I Inhabit?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in two original solo performances presented on the festival&#8217;s opening night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the performances, actress Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Mira moderated a discussion with the six principal creators. The overall stage and visual design for both productions was created by Gabriela Torrej\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Theatre Program \u2013 Tronador Hall<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Gladys, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">written and directed by actress, playwright, and director Elisa Zulueta, celebrated ten years on stage with a special performance at Teatro del Lago&#8217;s Tronador Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teatro del Canto&#8217;s acclaimed adaptation of Luis Sep\u00falveda&#8217;s beloved novel for children and family audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The production was also presented free of charge in concert format at the Frutillar Public Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following both performances, Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Mira moderated conversations between the creative teams and the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Professional Development<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Performing Arts Workshops, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free workshops were held at Kopernikus School in Frutillar for performing artists from the Los Lagos Region\u2014including musicians, dancers, circus artists, actors, and other professionals and emerging artists.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The directors of the productions presented during the festival each led a practical workshop based on their own artistic methodologies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Contemporary Methodologies for the Performing Arts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by Paula Aros Gho (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2&#215;3: What Do I Inhabit?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acting Through Andr\u00e9s P\u00e9rez Araya&#8217;s Staging Methodology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by Iv\u00e1n \u00c1lvarez de Araya (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2&#215;3: What Do I Inhabit?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>From Story to Word, and from Word to Song<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by Elvira L\u00f3pez and Cristian Molina (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Understanding Realist Theatre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, led by Elisa Zulueta (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gladys<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Applied Theatre Seminar<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty scholarships were awarded to school teachers to explore theatre as a pedagogical tool in their classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Led by Ver\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda Huidobro and Luna Del Canto from Teatro La Balanza, the seminar consisted of a twelve-hour in-person intensive during Escena Austral, followed by online mentoring throughout the rest of the year.
