The last cuplé: Sarita Montiel’s cabaret
The Last Cuplé: Sarita Montiel’s Cabaret is a musical theatre production in which Chilean actress Antonia Santa María, inspired by the legendary Spanish diva Sara Montiel, brings to life a carefully curated and diverse repertoire of couplés through both performance and song.
The cuplé is a musical genre that originated in nineteenth-century Spain. Performed as songs in the form of female monologues, these witty and playful stories were originally considered a form of popular entertainment, associated with cabaret performers and presented exclusively for male audiences.
In this production, the actress-soloist is accompanied by three live musicians performing on violin, double bass, and accordion. Together, they create an engaging, sensual, and mischievous cabaret experience inspired by the atmosphere of the 1950s.
This was La Santa’s very first production. It premiered in June 2010 at Centro Cultural Amanda to immediate success, followed by a tour of Enjoy casinos throughout Chile. In 2011, it opened the inaugural season of the newly established Teatro Municipal de Las Condes, where it consistently performed to full houses.
